Title Toledoth - City of Generations Author Sheldon Mike Young Synopsis Samuel Levi Abulafia is the Jewish treasurer of Castile during the reign of Pedro the Cruel that began in 1350. Don Samuel's niece, Betsabe, and her husband Saul Abandana, have no child in the first ten years of their marriage. Under religious law, they must divorce unless Saul takes an additional wife. Betsabe adamantly opposes both alternatives. The dilemma is solved by Saul's taking a concubine by whom he can father children. Alas, the lecherous King lusts for the concubine. These private problems occur during the turbulent time the Black Death is raging in Spain, the King's brothers are in rebellion, and the populace is provoked to riots against the Jews. Don Samuel is determined to build the magnificent synagogue in Toledo, now known as the Church of El Transito. The beautiful eastern wall of the synagogue is pictured on the book's cover. This historical novel is the product of 40 years of research. There is a legend that some Jews, after the Babylonian conquest of Israel, were taken as slaves to Spain. Ultimately, they allegedly founded Toledoth, now called Toledo. On the expulsion of Jews from Spain, ghostly testimonials remained, testifying to the long time Jewish presence. One monument is that synagogue built by Samuel. With his fall from grace, the community atrophied. But while history marches on, private lives continue - and this is the tale of why Saul had two wives and how the three survived the events of their times. Biography Sheldon Mike Young has been a practicing pension lawyer for over 50 years. He has taught the course in pension law at two Law Schools, in a Charter Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel and wrote Pension and Profit Sharing Plans, a seven volume (1976-1993) legal treatise on pension law. He served in the USN in WWII, then returned to Ohio State University Law School. For 40 years, he has gathered information for this novel. His wife, Bette Roth Young, is the author of Emma Lazarus in her World. He has contributed numerous articles to several periodicals on a variety of subjects. To date, Mr. Young is coming up with his new book entitled The Devil's Bridge.
