The Odyssey of Nashirigawa is an 11th Century tale about three boys, triplets Imatu, (the strong one), Tokeyo (the gentle one) and Itzu (the clever and handsome one) and the obstacles they had to overcome in order to reach Nashirigawa (the land of eternal spring). Yabu Massa is the tale of a young boy who, as the result of being a very famous puppeteer, has the opportunity to save the life of the emperor of Japan when he visited the United Nations. Biography J.G. Tao Yin has had a long ongoing relationship with the oriental world, its history, literature and art forms. She has lectured on the subject and published articles and poems dealing with the intricacies of Oriental culture. These two tales, therefore, are as much an expression of the depth of her knowledge of the East as a creative attempt to capture its divided essence or spirit. In this sense, the stories paint a picture of the ancient and modern worlds of Japan as not so very different. A bona fide collector of oriental art from the tender age of 10 when she bought her first piece for 12 dollars, Jean Goldstein, Tao Yin was born in Union City, New Jersey in 1922. The daughter of Samuel Harber, a prominent attorney and Bertha Levy, a person of great depth and humor, Jean will be the first to tell you that her life, though not easy, has been an adventure full of diversity, adversity, and surprises – not the least of which of which was of her having learned, in later life, that she has this ability to write poetry and to tell interesting stories. Formally educated at Adelphi University and the China Institute, a world traveler and expert in Oriental art, Jean recently published Feelings, an in-depth evaluation of the human experience in poetic form for which President Clinton honored her with the title of "the Grandma Moses of Poetry." She often muses that "I must have been of oriental heritage in an earlier life." In her words, Tao Yin means "the philosophy of the feminine." This has been her individual trademark ever since the age of 17 and, for sure, will be her legacy.
