Thomas F. Linehan, Jr.
Synopsis
A thirteen year old boy spins a thread of personal conflicts twisting and during through real historical events subtly uncovering a base of moral values that were always there waiting to be realized. The theme touches upon several modern problems effecting teens including: firearms in schools, bullying, abuse by an alcoholic parent, feeling the loss of a parent and childhood depression. There are no simple answers to difficult life situations. The author strives to maintain realism throughout in depicting how a teen in mid 1800's might respond to such highly stressful conflicts.
Accurately tracking the actual troop movements of a real infantry regiment, the story offers vivid battle scenes reconstructed from actual regimental history. But the author carefully blends in the sights, sounds, smells, fear, loneliness and camaraderie that make up the life of a foot soldier. Through the eyes and heart of a seemingly ordinary boy, the reader rides the highs and lows of his unknowingly courageous soul through a myriad of challenges.
